Biography
Early Life
Samuel Hubbard Stevens was born on November 20, 1802, in Meredith Center, Belknap County, New Hampshire, the son of John Stevens and Ruhannah Fifield. A bright scholar, he graduated from Dartmouth College in 1830 before pursuing a career in law.
Career
After graduation, Samuel practiced law in several towns, including Bristol, Lawrence (Massachusetts), and Exeter, before finally settling in Concord, New Hampshire. He became a respected lawyer and community member, known for both his professional contributions and civic engagement.
He was an active member of the Temperance Society in Concord and once represented the town of Bristol in the New Hampshire Legislature. In 1859, Samuel placed an advertisement in the Exeter Newsletter announcing the sale of his late father-in-law Moses Sanborn’s farm and tannery—an extensive property of 83 acres that included barns, orchards, and a 70-pit tannery.
Family
Samuel married Seraphina Sanborn, connecting him to the long-established Sanborn family of Kingston, NH. Together, they had one daughter, Elizabeth Seraphina, born in 1844.
Later Years & Legacy
On March 19, 1876, at the age of 73, Samuel passed away suddenly at his home in Concord after suffering a heart attack. His obituary in the N.H. Patriot and Gazette described him as a “well-known gentleman and prominent citizen of Concord.”
He was laid to rest in Plains Cemetery, Kingston, Rockingham County, New Hampshire, where his headstone still stands as a testament to his life. Though time and weather wore away the stone, his memory continues to be honored through preservation efforts that ensure his story is not forgotten.
