Biography
Early Life
Sibyl Guthrie was born in 1788, the daughter of Elijah Sexton and Sibyl Spencer. While little is recorded about her own early years, she came of age during the early republic era, when Jefferson County, New York, was still being settled and Sackets Harbor was transforming into a bustling community.
Marriage & Family
She married Dr. Samuel Guthrie (1782–1848), a pioneering physician and chemist who moved to Sackets Harbor in the early 1800s. Samuel became widely known for his medical practice and, most famously, for discovering chloroform in 1831. Their marriage placed Sibyl in the center of a household connected to both science and the growing social life of the village. Together they had at least two children:
Alfred Guthrie (1805–1882)
Captain Edwin Guthrie (1806–1847)
Life in Sackets Harbor
As the wife of a respected doctor, Sibyl’s life would have been closely tied to both family and community. The Guthrie home would have been a place where science, medicine, and family responsibilities intersected. While Samuel earned recognition in medical and chemical circles, Sibyl played the quieter but essential role of maintaining the family and supporting his work during an era when women’s contributions were often left unrecorded.
Later Years & Death
Sibyl Guthrie passed away on February 16, 1840, in Sackets Harbor. She was laid to rest at Lakeside Cemetery in Sackets Harbor, where her memory endures alongside that of her husband.
